For the Holiday Season 2009, the Office of the Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the First Lady of the Territory, Cecile de Jongh, continued the program started the previous year consisting of giving every child between K and 3rd grade a beautiful, hardcover book, written and illustrated by a local writer and a local artist.
The selected book for 2009 was Efa and the Mosquito (Little Bell Caribbean) by Alscess Lewis-Brown, and Cynthia Hatfield, both of St. Croix. Santa Claus with bags of gifts, many helping “elfs”, the First Lady, the author of the book, members of the Office of the Governor, and our publisher Mario Picayo in tow, visited tens of schools in the three islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. It was all smiles and cheers when Santa made its entrance, and more smiles when they received the gift in a beautiful recyclable and reusable multi-purpose red tote bag.
