A Very Smart Cat/Una gata muy inteligente has been a great success since its release in 2007 (third printing in 2013). This May, the lovable story about a very funny feline was the top choice of children in Springfield Oregon for the annual Gift of Literacy program.
This amazing initiative, inspired by a desire to promote a love of reading among young children, provides all first-grade students in Springfield with their choice of a hardbound book, selected from a collection of ten books they had been reading throughout the year. With the help of community organizers, the presentation includes small-group reading by guest readers to emphasize the importance of reading. All funding is sourced from community businesses and organizations, and the program itself is made up entirely of volunteers.

A Very Smart Cat/Una gata muy inteligente is bilingual (English/Spanish), which makes its selection for the program extra special, assuring the books are available to a larger group of people, as well as encouraging the acquisition of a new language by young children.
